Local SEO in Botswana

How search engines surface local businesses, and what Botswana business owners can do to improve their position in local results.

How local search works

When someone searches for a product or service and includes a location (or when Google infers their location from their device), the results they see are different from standard search results. Google shows a map with three business listings — what is commonly called the "local pack" — before the regular organic results.

Getting into that local pack is one of the highest-value things a small business can achieve in SEO. The businesses that appear there get visibility that is difficult to replicate through any other means. And for many searches in Botswana, that local pack is the primary way customers find businesses.

The factors that determine which businesses appear in the local pack are different from those that determine standard organic rankings. Understanding those factors is the starting point for effective local SEO.

The Ranking Signals

What Google considers for local results

Local search rankings are influenced by three broad categories of signals. Each one can be worked on independently, and improving all three creates a compounding effect on your visibility.

Relevance

How closely your business matches what the person is searching for. This is influenced by how you describe your business in your Google Business Profile, what categories you select, and what your website says about your services.

Businesses that clearly communicate what they do, in the language their customers actually use, tend to rank for more relevant searches.

Prominence

How well-known and well-regarded Google perceives your business to be. This is influenced by the number and quality of reviews, how often your business is mentioned across the web, and how authoritative your website is.

Building prominence takes time, but it is one of the most durable advantages in local search. Businesses with strong prominence are harder to displace from local results.

The Foundation

Google Business Profile: where to start

Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the most direct way to influence your local search visibility. It is the source of the information that appears in the local pack, in Google Maps, and in the knowledge panel that shows on the right side of search results when someone searches for your business by name.

A profile that is incomplete, inaccurate, or unverified is a significant missed opportunity. A profile that is fully built out, accurate, and actively maintained sends strong signals to Google that your business is legitimate and relevant.

A well-maintained Google Business Profile includes

Verified ownership

Google needs to confirm you are the legitimate owner of the business. Verification is typically done by postcard, phone, or email.

Accurate business name, address, and phone number

These three pieces of information must match exactly what appears on your website and in other online directories.

Correct business categories

Your primary category is the most important. Choose the one that most accurately describes your main service, not the most general option.

Complete business description

Use the 750-character description to explain what your business does, who it serves, and what makes it distinctive. Use natural language that includes relevant search terms.

Up-to-date opening hours

Incorrect hours create a poor experience for customers and signal to Google that your profile may not be actively maintained.

Photos of your business

Profiles with photos receive more engagement than those without. Include photos of your premises, your team, and examples of your work or products.
